We wadded up our t-shirts into random knots and held them all in place with rubber bands or twine. The next step was to unceremoniously dunk parts of the wadded up cloth into different buckets until the whole thing was covered in all different colors.
We didn't know about "batching" or curing our tie dyes so that the dye would have time to react with the cotton fibers for maximum fixation and vibrancy. We certainly didn't know about the use of soda ash or procion MX dyes.
What we did know was that we couldn't stand the anticipation of getting to see our creations for the first time. It was just like Christmas to unwrap those beautiful shirts. My sister and I never got over the thrill of it all and, using our knowledge and artistic talent, we decided to bring back the 60s and 70s with the revival of hippie clothing in the form of tie-dye.
We're striving to make the world a more colorful place, one tie-dyed t-shirt at a time.
Today the art of tie-dye has come a long way, becoming an art form that combines talent and science into wearable art masterpieces. Some designs born in the 60s will remain forever popular, however, with the Peace Sign pattern among the eternally coveted tie-dye patterns.
